The name Graz comes from Gradec, which was the first name of the city. Gradec comes from the Slavic language and means "small castle". The castle of Gradec was a strong fortress in that time. The German name "Graz" was used the first time in 1128.
The city area of Graz is subdivided in 17 city districts which have its own names: Innere Stadt, St. Leonhard, Geidorf, Lend, Gries, Jakomini, Liebenau, St. Peter, Waltendorf, Ries, Mariatrost, Andritz, Gösting, Eggenberg, Wetzelsdorf, Strassgang and Puntigam.
